Employment and Training
Nipissing First Nation Employment and Training is a direct service delivery agent of Service Canada with an agreement in place until Sept 30, 2010. To provide employment related services to unemployed and underemployed Band Members and affiliates(their dependants and spouses).
Some programs offered through the Employment and Training are Wage Subsidies, Purchase of Training, Community Development and Youth Projects, and Employment Assistance for Persons with Special Needs to name a few.
Partnerships have been forged between this office and other Nipissing First Nation Departments, community organizations and employers to benefit Nipissing members and their dependants. Although funding is limited, we continue to enjoy much success as a community that can be attributed to our extensive partnership collaborations.
We offer Employment & Career Counselling , job referrals, assistance with development of resumes, preparation for job interviews, job placement for both adults and students, retraining when appropriate and necessary, referrals to other departments and other agencies, and referrals for various career related assessments.

Partnerships were formed to bring a quality “Summer Program” to the children of Nipissing. ACTUA, a Science and Engineering Technology Program out of Ottawa University, offered 3 university 3rd. year students as camp instructors for our 65 children for a week in July 2008.
Algonquin Child and Family Services partnered with funding to employ a couple of Resource teachers to work with our Autisic children. Up to this time, this group had not been able to enjoy the benefits of our Summer Children`s Program.
Nipissing`s LDM covered the difference in wage costs to ensure quality care for all. A full complement of student staff was hired to work within the program. The staff received basic behavior awareness training from the Mental Health Services. The Education Department also made a substantial contribution to the Children`s program by, contributing towards staff wages and bussing.
The Ministry of Natural Resources partnered with this office and with the Forestry & Fisheries Dept. to provide employment for 2 youth interns for the summer months.
A series of “Pre-employment/Employment Preparation Workshops” were delivered as a collaboration between this office, True-Self Women`s Employment Service and DEOC- The Disabilities Employment Service for a total of 88 persons from our community.
Indian & Northern Affairs and Health Canada collaborated in the hiring of 12 students to work in various student placement capacities over the summer months.
A partnership was formed for the benefit of apprenticing an Education Assistant with Nbisiing Secondary School and the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre.
Another partnership was formed with the organization, People for Equal Partnership (PEP) for the hiring of a summer student as a Mental Health worker.
Partnerships were formed with the Ec. Dev. Dept. in the training of two interns.; a private contractor in combination with NFN to employ the services of a Treaty Research Assistant; Another partnership was developed with the Maintenance Department to employ and train a custodial worker. Various partnerships were also established with several Employers to assist in securing job opportunities for members.
Nipissing First Nation’s True Self/Debwewendizwin Employment & Training Program had another busy year, empowering women to achieve economic independence. The program offers women an opportunity to discover their true strengths and abilities, to work within a safe environment and to develop an individualized plan of growth.
