Ontario Works
Nipissing First Nation Ontario Works department is a program designed to meet and address the needs of individual community members. There are two types of assistance provided under the program:
Nipissing First Nation Ontario Works department developed an Ontario Works Service Plan 2009/2010 and provides employment assistance to individual community members. The Employment Assistance service delivery is in and continues to be in its implementing and planning stages of the Employment components. However the department abides by and within regulations and the Ontario Works Act pertaining to the financial and employment sector of its service delivery.
Ontario Works recipients can gain employability credentials within Nipissing First Nations local labour market. Nipissing First Nation has several departments which include: Administration (Bingo, Building Maintenance, Emergency Response, Executive Director, Finance, Housing, Public Works and Water Maintenance) Health & Social Services (Diabetes, Cradle to Learning, Employment and Training, Health Services, Home & community Care, Ojibwe Family Resource Centre-OFRC, Residential School, Right Path, Social Services, Native Child Welfare, Speech & Language, Youth Recreation) Lands & Resources ( Fisheries, Forestry , Land Office, membership) and Education (Couchie Day Care, Education Center, Garden Village Day Care and Library). Working together with all departments within and outside of the community will act as a catalyst for change and will begin to promote local ownership over programs and services.
Nipissing First Nation will refine developed delivery strategies as the program begins implementation within the community. There is no anticipated change in the manner in which income assistance is delivered or received with the community. The program will primarily operate on a referral basis and will only provide services which are not currently available to community members. For example, the following services will be provided on a referral basis to local community services:
Literacy (accessed and serviced by Literacy Coordinator)

Basic education (provided by local high school, adult education or alternative learning department)

Skills Training (provided by the local AHRDA office)

Addiction Services (provided by NADAAP and/or Addictions Services departments within the community health services building)

LEAP (provided by education department(s), AHRDA and Early Years and Health Babies program within the community health services building)

Job Search Support Services (provided by AHRDA and employment worker)

Employment Placement (provided by AHRADA and employment worker)
All services will be provided with the end goal of assisting community members to become more employable. To successfully implement the strategies the program will need to communicate the intent and objective of the program to the local community. This will occur through community forums and individual discussion while updating the Participation Agreements with Ontario Works recipients. It is important to note that the first quarter or half of the full program delivery will be utilized updating and developing action plans for each participant with the Ontario Works program. Clients will be encouraged to update their Participation Agreements on a more regular basis and to follow a progressive, goal-orientated action plan to increase employability.
The use of case management strategies will help to measure the increase to employability. AD Morrison software will also provide data entry that will allow for our Ontario Works department to measure and track.
