Wildlife and Hunting

There are many issues in wildlife and hunting these days. How many moose are out there? How many deer? Is there enough habitat? How much habitat is on NFN Lands? How and when should NFN grant Inter-Treaty harvesting permission to members of other First Nations? Should NFN be concerned about the amount of commercial hunting (hunting for sale of meat) by Band members? These are some of the questions and issues being discussed within the department and with the Natural Resource Committee made up of interested or concerned NFN members. If you would like to be a member of this committee or would like to attend these open meetings, contact our office at (705) 753-2922 to find out more.

Species at Risk

Nipissing First Nation is home to at least three nationally recognized Species at Risk: the Lake Sturgeon, the Blandings Turtle and the Eastern Hognose Snake. A Species at Risk is a plant or animal found to be at some risk of disappearing from the wild in Canada.

The Natural Resource Department is studying these three species with funding from the Government of Canada Aboriginal Funds for Species at Risk Program. We are still gathering information on all three, so if you see one of these please take a picture if you can, note the location and call the office at (705) 753-2922.
