What are Species at Risk...

The term, Species at Risk, refers to wild plants and animals that have been assessed by an independent body, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), and found to be at some risk of disappearing from the wild in Canada.

Risk Status Description
Extinct No longer lives anywhere in the world.
Extirpated At one time lived in Ontario, but no longer lives in the province.
Endangered Facing imminent extinction or extirpation, still know to live in the wild of Ontario.
Threatened Likely to become endangered if steps are not take to protect this wild specie in Ontario.  Potentially being extinct or extirpated.
Special Concern Not yet endangered or threatened.
